The Tokyo Institute of Psychiatry (TIP) was built in 1973, as a Tokyo Metropolitan Institution, on land adjoining the Tokyo Metropolitan Matsuzawa Hospital, Japan's oldest public mental hospital, which has been holding a leading position in psychiatric practice and research since its foundation in 1879. In 1981, TIP was incorporated as a juridical foundation supported by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.

Our research divisions and departments were reorganized in 2001, consisting of three divisions - division of psychiatric disorders research, division of social psychiatry, and division of psychobiology - and fifteen departments under them. Thus, the scope of our research activities has been covering a broad range of topics in psychosocial psychiatry and biological psychiatry.

In 2004, new research projects started in the Tokyo Metropolitan Organization for Medical Research (TMOMR) to meet the urgent need of the people in Tokyo for health care and therapy. Along with this, two research projects began at TIP. In the April of 2005, all of the research departments were abolished and their functions were transferred to these and newly created projects. At present, seven projects are being undertaken to cope with mental health problems. In addition, Basic Science and Technology Center was created to support these projects.
